Historic Apartment Buildings

The lovely streetscapes of downtown Salt Lake City feature historic apartment buildings on nearly every block. Each building echoes with the sounds of the people who passed through it, whether they lived there for months or years. Apartments became places of beginning, ending, and beginning again. Whether you were a young couple starting out your marriage or a single woman leaving home for the first time, the apartment provided a sense of adventure. It was just the right mix of permanency and possibility. It felt like a home, but not necessarily your home.

More than 100 apartment buildings were built in the city during the first few decades of the 20th century. They housed a growing urban population that wanted the excitement of living downtown. With whimsical names such as the Piccadilly, the Peter Pan, and the Waldor, these building beckoned to Utahns who were interested in a new approach to residential life.
